ExperienceI have significant tutoring experience with undergraduates in many areas of study, but mostly in biology and anthropology. I have also lectured undergraduate anthropology courses. Additionally, I managed the tutoring services provided to graduate and undergraduate students at a major university tutoring center.
I have always enjoyed learning, and I believe that teaching is intrinsically tied into the process of learning, and thus have a significant interest in teaching. My academic background is scattered, but primarily resides in anthropology - specifically medical anthropology - but have been well trained in ethnology and linguistic anthropology at UNM's graduate program. This program granted me with an incredible experience and an increased command of not only study skills, but also of writing techniques. During and since my graduate training in both anthropology and medicine, I was fortunate to have some portions of my work represented in a handful of publications and numerous conferences.
I have taken an interdisciplinary approach to my learning and thus have been trained in sociology, psychology, evolutionary ecology, biology, community health, public health, epidemiology, and history in addition to anthropology and medicine at the graduate level.
My bachelors in biology was mostly oriented around a pre-medical curriculum that was requisite for entry into medical school.
In addition to the above, I am a High School drop-out, who took the GED after much motivation from my mother to do something other than rotating tires at a used car dealership. I feel that my academic journey has been long and arduous, but one of the most rewarding facets of my life.
HobbiesAs stated above, I enjoy learning - I guess that's why I am still taking classes! I plan to finish my PhD in medical anthropology and my medical degree in preparation for doing interdisciplinary work on health among traditionally marginalized populations.
Much of my work is in understanding health via a number of paradigms in order to better understand how complex wellness and illness really are - particularly in areas such as the Navajo reservation.
I enjoy sports, specifically football, lacrosse and basketball, all of which I avidly played in high school and some in college. I also enjoy coaching, as I helped manage a budding middle-school lacrosse team in Tucson.
I enjoy volunteering a significant amount of my time to charitable or religious foundations such as Healthcare for the Homeless. I also work with the refugee well-being project that is currently underway in Albuquerque to help assist in the difficult transition that is being transplanted to the United States.
I am married and have four incredibly cute little boys. My life is full of noisy kids, studying, and enjoying time with my family.
I am currently in medical school and will have very limited availability.

Matthew worked with my 11 year old homeschooled son and he was excellent! We really appreciated his reliability and his ability to present the writing lessons in a creative and engaging manner so that Jacob was able to maintain focus. Jacob looked forward to each session with Matthew and his help as a writing tutor improved our son's writing skills! I would highly recommend Matthew Nelson as a tutor!
I got help with biology last semester and it went great! Matt was really helpful and helped me really understand what was going on, especially with genetics. I would recommend him to anyone that needs help with just about anything in college. I remember that he said he also tutors sociology or anthropology or something because he has a graduate degree in it. I'll definitely be using him again in the future.
